Moving City

Cities mades for war: a European army in late Sixteenth-Century Morocco
(EXPL/HAR-HIS/1521/2021)

The MOVING CITY project aims to bridge the gap that still persists as to the knowledge of the composition of the army that King D. Sebastião led to Ksar El-Kebir.

The complex process of negotiating the freedom of prisoners after the battle in several cities and over more than a dozen years, is recorded in the chronicles and relations wrote by the religious of the Order of the Holy Trinity who carried out the organization of the rescues in Morocco.

From these documents we can identify the individuals who were rescued and reconstruct their daily lives during the years following the battle. The identification of all these captives will be fundamental to know both the civilian and military personnel in the ranks of the army – a true "moving city".
